Blogs are a fantastic way to market online or to spread the word about a topic that is close to your heart. If you are interested in someone other than you and a few close friends and family members visiting your blog, you will need to attract traffics to it. In this article, I will give you some tips to help you drive traffic to your blog.
Limit the Competition: No, this doesn’t involve anything untoward, such as hacking into another person’s blog and shutting it down. Instead, it has to do with picking the right niche. Don’t choose a niche that is too competitive. If the topic you want to blog about is very competitive, choose a sub-niche. For example, if you want to blog about weight loss, don’t try to get high rankings for the word “weight loss.” It will be nearly impossible. Instead, shoot for something like “lose ten pounds.” You will have much better luck. However, please note, you will need to find a niche that has enough traffic that will support your blog.
I am using some paid tools to research my keywords, but there are some really neat free tools available such as, Wordtracker and the SEO book keywords tool.
Focusing on Competing Websites: Try reading to read at least 5 blogs in your niche a day and look at what they’re writing about, where are they getting links from, who is talking or commenting on their blogs. Imitate what they’re doing, but in your own ways to make yours more unique. It is easy these days to subscribe to competing blogs in your marketplace by using RSS feed readers like IGoogle, Google readers, Google blog Search, or Bloglines.
Post Often: The search engines reward sites that are updated often. Be sure to post to your blog at least once a day. After you post to your blog, be sure to ping it. This will let the blogosphere know that you just made an update. If you are busy for some time, you can either ask for guest postings or hire someone to post for you.
Be Informative: Provide good information. If your blog subject is about ‘Making Money Online’ don’t write about ‘Dogs Training Guide’ as this has no interest to your readers. This can only waste their time. Make your blog “sticky” by providing your readership with information he/she doesn’t believe they can get anywhere else, or at least wouldn’t enjoy getting it anywhere else, as much. Be sure that your blog has plenty of content and substance. Try not to think about which keywords to use, or keywords density too much. If you update your blog often, then all your keywords are bound to find their way into your posts. I try to update this one once a day.
There are several places where you can find new fresh ideas to write about. For me, I tend to look at Ebay Pulse, Google trends, Technorati, Google News, Yahoo Buzz index, Digg, Sphinn, Techme, Tailrank, Youtube most discussed, Youtube today’s favorite videos and several blogs of my niche.
Run a Contest: Contests are great in getting more new readers, back links and subscribers to your blog. The bigger the price, the more readers you will attract. Be sure to have your blog in top condition during and after the contest. You should update your blog frequently during this time; make sure there are no broken links. If it’s a new blog, make sure the design is finish before running a contest and not half baked as this can make your blog look unprofessional. At the end of the day, you really want to retain the readers that you attracted in the first place with your contest.
Guest Postings: Guest postings in other popular blogs can give you the publicity that you badly needed. You don’t need to stay in your own niche market, but try to branch out to other closely related niche blogs as well. This will bring in the readers that wouldn’t have otherwise known about you. Again, as running a contest, keep your blog in tip top condition when your post is published. You will want to take advantage of this sudden surge in traffic.
Blog Comments: Commenting on other high traffic blogs is a good way to gain a reputation as an expert in your field. Most Wordpress run blogs now have top commentator plug-in installed, where the person with the most comments get to have his/her name display on the side bar. When commenting on blogs, don’t just write down a few words, like “great” or “nice post”. This won’t get you notice, but doing this a few time, you’re being perceived as a spammer.
Make Friends: The phrase “It’s not what you know, but who you know” run true for us newbie bloggers. Good friends in high places are hard to come by when you’re just starting out. Making friends is one of the most under used method of getting your blog known to other bloggers. You should go out of your way to make friends with people you have dealing with and trusted in your own niche forums (Digital Point, Warriors, Site Point, Wicked Fire), social networking sites (Facebook or Myspace etc..). Friends tend to help each other out, this can be useful if you just launch a new blog or have a new product to sell. Your friends tell their friends, and so further….
Show Statistics: We bloggers are curious creatures. We collect stats of everything. I check my Entrecard, Aswat, Adsense, Affiliates incomes and several more stats almost daily like it’s my religious duty. John Chow started the trend of publishing monthly income stat on his blog. It became a big hit as bloggers wanted to see how much a Make Money Online blog earn monthly, he went from zero to more than $27k in a year. For me, I don’t like to publish the amount of cash I’m earning, but it is a good idea to let the readers know how much you make with your blog. It gives them something to identify with, and if you’re successful and is making a lot of money, your readers would want to stick around your blog to learn from you.
Interviews: This is another good way to get traffic. Don’t be afraid to ask for an interview with an authority figure of your niche. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The worse they can do is turns you down. An interview can take longer to plan out and write, but you can get a lot of back links from this as people would want to link to an interview with an authority figure. Bruce Cat dot com is only a month old and I’ve already interviewed two bloggers(Marie Claire, Colin Crawford), whom are more experience at blogging than I am.
Use Forums: Most forums allow you to have 4 links in your signature. Put your blog’s URL in there with your keywords as anchor text. If your blog is new, add the URL to your signature and make a few posts. Your blog should be indexed in Google in a few hours not days. If you have active friends in the forum, try to swap signature links with them.
Use Blog Directories: This was a pretty popular method to get good rankings for your blogs in the past. However, it has been overshadowed by the social networks lately. It is still a great way to obtain incoming links and to also pick up some free traffic. I am still receiving hits from sites I submitted to blog directories 12 months ago. Here is a good list of blog directories to submit to
Press Releases and Article Directories: Submit press release and articles to their respective directories. There are literally thousands of those out there. I’ve been promising to give you, the lists of Press Release directories, General Web Directories, Do Follow comment Blogs, and I will deliver once I have more time. Speaking of article directories, I was contacted by a large company for an interview about SEO. They found one of my articles on EzineArticle.
Use Social Network Sites: Social Book Marking sites are a great way to gain really powerful back links to your site. They also work well for picking up some extra, free traffic as well. Just be sure not to spam these sites and every now and then, be sure that every site that you submit is not a sales page.
I use Feedburner Feed Flare that allows my readers to submit the content to social media services. You could use Share it! as well.
Be Controversial: Bad publicity is better than no publicity. You shouldn’t be worried about what other bloggers think about you. You write what you feel, if they don’t like it, then they will definitely discuss it on their blogs. Hence, you’ll get free backlinks, free publicity. Why do you think the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton get themselves in the spotlight? They don’t get that much attention by being good girls.
Advertise Your Blogs: There are so ways to advertise your blogs these days, all you need is some spare cash. Buy banner ads, ReviewMe, Pay per Post, Text link Ads, from other related blog sites.
Use the Right Plug-ins: If you are using Wordpress as your blogging platform, the right plug-ins can go a long way in helping you secure top rankings. Here are a few good ones: the SEO Title Tag, All in One SEO Pack, Akismet, Feed Burner Feed Smith, Popular Posts, Popularity Contests, Related Posts, Commenting plug-ins such as, Subscribe to comments, Show top Commentators, Allpassion Linkluv, Commentluv, and MyAvatar.
These are some tips that will that help you properly optimize and drive traffics to your blog. Remember to choose a topic that is not too competitive, post often, and submit your blogs to blog directories and social network and book-marking sites. Also, be sure to use the correct plug-ins. When used correctly, plug-ins will give you an advantage over the competition. If you follow the above tips and stick with your blog, you should see excellent results with the search engine. The most important thing is to keep on plugging along. You might not see results right away. But if you have chosen a good topic, you should see results soon.
This is quite a long post. Maybe too long, but i don’t really want to split them up into small sections to create more pages
I will try to add more info over this one in the near future and turn it into an ebook to give away for free to Bruce Cat readers ![]()

Does everyone remember years ago how when we were at school if there was a party
going on, flyer's would be handed out in between classes or amongst a group of
friends? If not... you have seen the movies where people give out flyers about
a big party at Howie Lowenstein's place on Friday night! The classic "throw
the flyers" routine from the top of the stairs and everyone gets a copy magically
fall into their hands?
Or now, how many of us receive invitations to events through Facebook that
already have over 30 people RSVP to go.

Good tips (albeit obvious) but just one comment - change your link color! It looks atrocious! My eyes are on FIRE!
